Depending on the type of wax (hard or soft), the wax is either warmed to a liquid state or used at room temperature with cold wax strips. The wax is applied in the direction of hair growth with a spatula or applicator. For hard wax, the wax hardens and is quickly removed without cloth strips, pulling hair out from the root. For soft wax, a cloth or paper strip is pressed onto the wax and swiftly pulled off in the opposite direction. After waxing, any remaining wax is removed, and a soothing lotion or gel—often containing aloe vera or chamomile—is applied to reduce redness and irritation.
